Wen Growth or Fungus?
How can I tell the difference between Fungas & Wen growth?
I got a new oranda today, he's dark brown like chocolate, looks healthy, acts like a typical goldfish so far...but it has a white spot on its wen that I am not sure is good growth or bad.
I've heard they get a white spot & a few days later a new bit of wen appears..
I have my new chocolate oranda in QT so if I have to do anything I can, but he was in the main tank for a few hrs.
EDIT:
Ok I have a pic it's really bad & doesn't really show the growth - but you can kind of see the spot on the side of his head (& no it's not a bubble from the water)

Would need a closer look, but I would say wen growth. If the water quality is perfect and he isn't scratching anywhere, I would just leave him be. Dark colours make the new wen growth stick out more and they grow a lot when they are young, provided they have the genes for it.

Awesome thanks!!!
he's in QT anyway so I can keep an eye on it, he seems a little tired & hides behind the cave...but that could just bc he's new & when he was in the main tank the current was really too strong for him, there are no other fish in QT with him & the tank is in my room so no traffic freaking him out.
It's weird though I have a bad feeling about him - maybe im just worried since the last oranda i bought is Michael who has serious health problems...
how long does it take to go away if it is wen growth? How To Do Fish Surgery

Oh it will come back, and move and get bigger, then poof! gone. If it is fungus it would just get huge and kill him, so unless it starts to engulf his head, don't panic.
I don't know where you bought him, but around here, the goldfish are rarely in the store for long and most goldfish are imported... so they get shipped in a box to a store, dropped into an overcrowded tank, barely fed, then netted and brought home. Feed him plenty of food, keep his water clean and don't prod him too much. He is probably weak and stressed from the travel and starvation. 2-3 days and he'll be hyper :D90G Goldfish Tank - 2 ranchus, a black ranchu, and a Demekin.

I agree with Xavier...I think, from that photo, it's a new bit of wen.
Not sure how long it will look like that...it seems to grow and darken without rhyme or reason (that I've found) on mine...55 g Goldfish Tank - 5 Fancies, 2 Dojos

I agree, it seems completely random... and I've never spent much time timing it. Sometimes it's 3 days, sometimes 1. Once it was tiny and got bigger and bigger for 2 days, then shrunk for 2 days, then remained a small dot for a little longer. I posted pics of it in another post somewhere :P

Thanks to u both!!!
Ya he is imported, not sure from where, & they only got them on monday - which is a surprise since they usually quarantine them for a while before putting them up for sale...but they got a lot so i think that had to do with the quick turn around.
i'll feed him lots of little meals & check his water again tomorrow..i hope its wen growth...i really would like to see that happen! 3 orandas & i've never seen itHow To Do Fish Surgery
