Default I think one of my Platies is actually a Molly

Some time back I bought what was labeled a "Marigold Platy". It's a pretty colored fish Starting with deep gold and a little black on the front, changing to orange mid-body, then going to red on the tail. I always thought the fish looked a little different than the other Platies in the body shape and dorsal fin.

Recently I got two Mollies, and they look just like the "Marigold Platy" in body style. On the other hand, I could swear the "Marigold Platy" male was trying to get frisky with one of the female Platies.

I'm fairly certain it's actually a Molly though. The resemblance between it and the other Mollies is too striking.

I have had the same dilemma at times, do a google search on pics of both variety, I think the platty has a pointier nose and different tail, may be wrong though.

There are a couple pointers. The Molly's head is a little bigger in the horizontal plane and the body is skinnier in the vertical plane. My big tip off was a search on "Marigold Platy". It looks absolutely nothing like the fish I have! LOL!
