I'd wait--can't think why you would need to do one until after your ammonia and nitrites are zero. This is fishless, right?

You should not have to do a water change until you have 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites. At that time you will have high nitrates ....then you do a large water change to get those nitrates to 10 or so, and add your fish. You will have a big bacteria colony then and be able to add several fish at once.

    Nice going.

  7. Default day 5

Well its day 5 now and my ammonia looks like a 3 or 4 and my nitrites are 5.0. so I have my nitrites maxed out on my card. will this go back down in the next few days?

give it a day or two when ammonia an nitrites hit 0 you'll be ok

The nitrite spike can last up to 2 weeks from what I've heard.
