  1. Default When do you give up on a fish?

When do you give up on a fish? I tried to save a couple fish but they were just too far gone in spite of my efforts to save them. Do you just wait for your fish to die who are too far gone or do you euthanize them? If you euthanize, how do you go about it? Thanks.

Me personally, I just let them die on their own if they're too far gone or treatment isn't working. I dont think I could bring myself to euthanize, but like I said thats just me.

If you were going to euthanize, I hear putting the fish in icewater is a humane one. Also, alkaseltzer.

I euthanized two fish today and felt really bad about it. I put them in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer. I figured if it had to be done that was about as quick and painless as possible.

Once I see a fish starting to suffer I Euthanize - I put them to sleep using clove oil which is painless and vet's use it as well in fish to anethetize them - also if your puffers teeth grow too long you use it to clip their teeth for them..woops going off subject..

Anyway once they are asleep and it is a smaller fish I give them a good whack making sure they are dead - if it is a bigger fish I put them in the freezer so they don't wake up anymore from their sleep

I just had to euthanize my gourami. He was laying on the bottom of the tank for days and there wasn't anything I could do for him (I believe it was a severe case of swim bladder).

Anyway, I used the ice water method and it took much longer then I expected (less then a minute, but it wasn't immediate). I felt awful. I will most definitely use the clove oil next time.

Sorry the ice water method took longer on your gourami. I've only ever used it on very small fish like guppies and white clouds and it took only a couple seconds. I guess it doesn't work as well for bigger fish maybe?

I've heard putting them in vodka works well. However I know of many people who put them in the freezer like everyone else just said.

That is one thing I couldn't do!

I've never had to do it personally, but when I do I think I will just put them in clove oil and freeze them.

Anything is better than suffering... I would hope someone would put me out of my misery if I was suffering
