What do you mean how long does it take to get algae in a tank?
Are you aiming to grow a certain algae?
Algae comes w/ incorrect nutrients/light in the tank.
So you can grow it as fast as you want, or not grow it.

I thought it was just a part of having a fish tank.

Algae isn't a bad thing by itself unless its growing on plants and stifling their growth. It can however be a very good indicator of nutrient or light imbalances in your tank, depending on the type.

But if you can't control it, then you have issues. if it is just bits and pieces...you should be fine.
I use algae as a judgement on my plants. If I grow algae, then I know i have an imbalance to less/much nutrients/light to the plants.
If I hit the right amount-then hardly any algae.
