Fluval 405 Set Up and Maintenance
I have a Fluval 405 on a 55 gallon tank w some platties, mollies, and a gourami. What's the best media filter set up you recommend and how often do I clean it and how? I'm kinda new to this set up

People load their filters much to their own preference. The biomax should be where the water is the cleanest, in the top basket.
I use filter floss in the middle basket and on the bottom, phosphate sponges. Everyone has their own preferences what they like to use. I clean mine out about every two months replacing only the filter floss and the phosphate sponges. And rinse out the sponges.Cycling With Fish?•• The Fishless Cycle••

+1 to the above
There is no "right" answere, just different options. When I used mu 405 on my moderatly stocked 55 gallon tank, I used only but bio-max in the trays and the sponges. As I have no phosphates and nitrates in my tap water, that set-up worked great for me.
I clean all my canister filters every month or so in old tank water. I just swish the media around in it until it looks cleanIf you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.
