Carpet nem vs BTA
Just curious what people's thoughts were... which ones they liked more and why... I don't like how BTA's are so mobile since they never seem to stay where I want them to lol but idk if carpets are the same way or not or what the deal is lol
Any thoughts/experiences feel free to share55g Long --> After 18mo of doing well the tank crashed during moving. Most likely cause: Flatworm Die-off... won't start another until after moving... Likely not until late 2013

Carpets anemones (Haddoni and Giganteas) won't move unless something is really really wrong in the tank. At least my haddoni has not moved in the almost two years that I have had him. I certainly like my haddoni a lot more than the ever splitting and moving BTAs that I had
The only things you need to factor in is that they seam to like lower to moderate flow and can get very big, about 18 to 24 inches.
Carpets can also be aggressive and opportunistic feeders eating almost anything that brushes up against it. Mine ate every shrimp I had in the tank and a lot of snails so far. I don't know how the clown's survive in there but they certainly seam to love being in that anemone spending all of time in it.Last edited by Cliff; 08-10-2012 at 01:00 PM.
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

I'm not a fan of carpets in the hobby period unless they are captive specimens. Carpet nems are ecologically important and shouldn't be removed from the reefs. If you can get a captive "bred/propagated" specimen, and can house it properly, then go for it.

O wow GB I didn't know that was an issue thanks for the information... I'll keep an eye out for a captive bred specimen then since I'm thinking that's what I'm leaning towards getting

I usually try to get either captive bred or MAC certified fish and inverts when ever I buy. Our SW LFS is not getting their stock from MAC certified collectors and distributors now.
That will certain help minimize any potential environmental impact. If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

I actually like BTA's better for looks (I like wavy corals) but they can be pitas.
However, if your water parameters are solid, once they find a spot they like, they shouldn't move. They also shouldn't split so much like I was finding in my tank. However, in discussion with my local reef club, turns out that BTA's are just sensitive to shifts in water parameters - and my BTA would split whenever there was a variance. So my problems were of my own causing. With stable water, theyshould stay put and just grow...
