Keeping A Betta In This Type Of Tank...

Hi,

Yesterday, I bought a 4ft, 73G tank for a community set-up. I have a Betta in a 2ft, 17G at the moment, and he plays nice with my Neon Tetras and Kuhli Loaches. Some people on here have advised me that my new tank will have a required current level too powerful for a Betta, and the tanks depth (22") could be a problem, too.

Could anyone recommend a way to make him comfortable? Or will he be fine and people are concerned for nothing? Love to hear from anyone keeping Bettas in large tanks, but any view is wanted.

Current wont be a problem as long as he isnt being thrown around the tank. In large tanks with standard filtration there are always area's without a huge amount of current. Iv kept lots of betta's and half of them actually spent hours swimming in and out of the current...

I dont see any reason why depth should be an issue....

The perfect large betta community tank should be heavily planted and lightly stocked with medium filtration...

I mentioned this in your other thread. I kept a betta in a 4ft 77gal tank. So long as you have resting places (taller plants, decorations, a cave or two or three) he will acclimatise just fine. You'll find he perches in odd places, try to have something at all levels of the tank.

Depth is not an issue at all, the fish just goes where he wants, you just need to make sure he has the option to hang out where he likes.

People assume bettas hate current because new bettas don't handle it well - my thought is that they've spent all their lives in cups to that point, so they simply aren't used to ANY flow. Given time and sufficient resting places, they soon are up to their usual betta tricks checking out all the nooks and crannies and hanging out in odd spots. The only bettas who have real trouble are the ones who are so finny they can't hardly swim, even in still water.
