Black Convicts and Silver Dollars
Is keeping one or two convicts and 5 silver dollar fish together a bad idea?

Yes its abad idea. Cons are nasty and sd are retiring and peaceful. How big is your tank?

I am planning on buying a 60 gallon and want to do as much research as possible before purchasing any fish.

That's a good idea. Sd go well with peaceful slowmoving fish. They do not like sudden movements aor any sort of aggression. I know its tough to not have variety but a school of 10 sd would be beatiful but that's all you would have. Not a bad thing.

Make sure you have no plants in the tank. SD love to eat plants and veggies are part of their normal diet. I fed mine a romane lettuce leaf daily along with their regular food. Great fish.

for that 60g, you can add in a rainbow cichlid or salvini (tri-color cichlid) who could match the convicts aggression. If you get 2 convicts, and don't pay attention to the sex, you could end up with thousands in that 60g tank.

Smaug was right on with his description of silver dollars. They are nothing but a big tetra, easily terrorized and very nervous fish. What do you want more........the convicts or the SD?
And then go from there but not together.Cycling With Fish?•• The Fishless Cycle••
