I have had or carried at the shop almost every type of commonly available mbuna and peacock on the market. I prefer peacocks because they are a lot less aggressive and therefore much more manageable. I think they are a lot more beautiful as well.

I like mbunas, but only in really big tanks. At the shop I work at we used to have a 220 with African cichlids and they all did very well. We had mbunas, peacocks, jewel cichlids, brichardi, bristlenose pleco, and bichirs. The brichardi and the bumblebee mbunas were breeding. Bumblebees are probably my favorite mbuna because they get so big and IME are more laid back (you don't have to have such an attitude if you are the biggest guy in the prison yard).

I wouldn't mix all that in smaller tanks, the size of the tank made a huge difference in its success.

Yellow Labs (still have them), Chadagha (still have one), Electric Blue Haps, Cobalt Blues, Peacocks, Elongatus. And I've kept Upsidedown Catfish with all of those.

I would love some Hongi some day. They're beautiful fish.

hongi are great especially when showing dominant colours. One of the best mbuna IMO

    Yellow labs and red zebra

just increased my maingano colony to 15. 2m 13f should be interesting very soon I already have 5f holding I wish I could get all 13 at once

  7. Default

yellow labs, red zebra, maingano, demasoni, barlowi, hongi, fuelleborni, random hybrids (i know how yall love them) - some of the unidentifiable mbuna i have are amongst my most beautiful and interesting.
Cuckoo cats truly are the goods (even though theyre not malawi, they work perfect in smaller malawi setups coz theyre not to big). The way they cruise around together, annoying other fish for the fun of it, all 4 powering head-on into filter outtake current as soon as the lights go out.
Would have to agree on the hongi thing though, so gorgeous when theyre dominant.

Hey Daimen, you seem to pretty pretty knowledgeable on Mbuna. Do you have any idea what this one is? I used to think he was a bumblebee but now I don't think so. He seems like he's going to stay smaller based on his growth rate, but stands up zebras three times his size no sweat, awesome little fish. The rest of my stock is a couple zebras, a lab, a couple OB's, a rusty, a socolofi, an obliquiden and a jewel. Also have a red top ndumbi but he's having a really hard time fitting in and I don't think he's going to make it.

I don't think he is a crabro. maybe PS elongatus bee. if not the bee then definatly elongatus spec. Do you have any females in your tank?
