Brown is describing the color of the diatomes but it is not the same as brown algae.

There are to diferent species of catfish sold as Pictus, one gets to about 6" the other to about 12". If I remember right the small one has bigger spots.

Otos eat diatomes SAE eat brown algae if you have brown algae get SAE if you have diatomes get a few otos. Tank permitting OFC.

If its Diatomes Oto cats are one of the few fish that eat it

You should keep your filter on as that is where most of the bacteria will grow.

And airstones aren't a necessity but to add one all you do is pretty much just stick it in the tank.
