Definitely male. Female will lack long flowing tailfins and shorter dorsal spines also majority of the coloration for female is yellow and reds

It’s very likely that they are already inbred most breeders do incross unfortunately trying to stretch out the need to incorporate new brood stock :(

It was a easy transition for the most part but the job change had me just maintaining the tanks on the weekends so I’m going to relocate all the fish and start new in the new place should be a nice...

Does sound like maybe the tap water has nitrates that would be my first test to eliminate the culprit

sounds like the nitrobacter ( species responsible for nitrite conversion) is still establishing so did you dose more ammonia after the water change and did it convert to 0ppm in 24 hrs like slap...

Change of plans of course the current plan is moving into a new place in the next few months this will give me opportunity to breakdown my tanks and start on some new builds sorry I’ve been away for...
