I would go out on a limb here, and say your convict in the 40 w/ tiger barbs would work out fine. I'd do it.

If by cooler temps you mean room temp (@ 70 degrees f) I would recommend bushynose plecos, I have one in a planted goldfish tank and she's happy... No algae either!
