Agreed. It is always tempting to go the DIY route for sake of saving money and pride, but some things are best left to the pros. IMO ferts would be one of them.

I've been using one of these...
I've been using one of these in my 4 gallon betta tank and its been holding out at 78 degrees pretty darn well. 50w and rated for 2-10 gallons. Hope this helps :D

Personally, I didn't have much luck with flake food. Now, all bettas are different, but I've found they are notoriously picky eaters overall. This may be your problem??? I would try betta pellets...
