yes that order will work just make sure you rinse the pellets and new sponge to get the stuff of them. DO NOT do anything to the old sponge. just keep it in old tank water while doing the swap.

your filter should have one infront of where the carbon bag goes. That is where most of your BB (beneficial bacteria) is going to be growing on the foam , an what you're going to want to swap.
