I tried to keep cherry shrimp with my sparkling gouramis, and the shrimp didn't last long. The young shrimp are small enough to eat, and the adults will get picked on.

Not currently, but at the time I introduced the plants there was no living algae or snails on them.

I doubt the LFS was trying to pull a fast one on me. They know me quite well, as I make all of my purchase through them. My guess is that they assumed I knew what I was getting into before I bought...
If there was algae/eggs on the plants before I dipped, they sure were dead after.
EDIT: I'd like to add that the plants were still living, after the dip.
