Just thinking today while checking out my tank.
Do you think the substrate plays a difference in how fast root tabs dissolve in our planted tanks?
I'd be inclined to think that pea sized gravel...

and your tank is too small for anything 'bigger and stronger' than a ram. getting a fish that fits that description would cause you more problems as it would beat up your ram and...
you can't add another ram to your set up.
so you have to fix what you have-remove the platy or remove the ram.

I did a 70% water change before, and they went without food for 7 days.
Everything was fine-except they ate some of my plants...
had to pop that into google and see some pics early on!

What are your test methods?
Generally a nitrite reading of 0 means an uncycled tank.
any other fish in the tank?
there is no set equation for fish keeping.
the reason why inch per gallon is wrong is that you can't fit a 10inch fish in a 10gallon tank...it wouldn't be able to wiggle, or turn around.

too strong of a current at the bottom, means the food won't be able to settle for your bottom dwellers...

so the thing with those tanks is that they are very deep.
so it's both an illusion and they really are deep tanks. lol
sand will eventually settle at the bottom of the gravel substrate you are...

depth is created by visual lines that make the tank look deep.
I think your gradient on the back to front slope of the tank is way to drastic-having that deep of substrate can cause problems when...
IF you are able, hanging it will nearly eliminate all sound because there is nothing to vibrate against.
