Thanks for the reply
When changing the water today I noticed that I haven't been going deep enough into the substrate with the vac. Pulled plenty of waste out. Hopefully my levels will go back...
I seem to have reoccurring trouble with fin rot (or something) in the fancier guppies. Here's the best pic I could get:
You can see the dark border around his tail, his fins...

Oh yeah... API Master Test Kit only does Ph (high and low range), Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate levels. What do you all use for testing water hardness if not the strips?

Right now I use both test strips (Jungle 5 in 1) and the API Master Test Kit. They are usually very close to each other. Water chemistry is an interesting thing. Some people seem to have a very easy...

Ok... I'm going to take a stab at it.
Gh (general hardness), Dh (German Degrees of hardness) and (dGh) degrees of general hardness are all the same thing = the mineral hardness (dissolved...
Hi, I'm a newbie so I checked AqAdvisor. It says you will need higher filtration capacity and that the range of Ph requirements between the different species is too wide. Well, here:

What veggies should I NOT put in the tank. I tried celery and cabbage and, man, it REALLY stank the tank! Seems to me that if it did that than maybe it would affect the chemistry...

Good morning (here) all!
As I've been testing water coming from the tap, I'm fairly sure that the Ph of our well water changes depending on local precipitation. This could just be my imagination,...
Oh and fair warning.... in a few weeks/months you're probably going to turn that 13 gallon tank into a quarantine tank and get a 30+ gallon ;)
Mu-ha-ha! Start saving up.
Ditto on the fishless cycle. 24 hours or the like is not adequate. See here:
I'm only a few months ahead of you and wished,...
Thanks again for the hearty welcome.
Yup, thanks everyone for sharing your input. I feel the same way about using chemicals. Besides, the high alkalinity (carbonate hardness) of my water acts as a Ph buffer, as I understand it, making...
Ok, good. I'll keep at it.
What about getting a substrate like this: ADA Amazonia II ??
Thank ya, thank ya, thank ya!
Yeah, I was surprised to find out that water "softeners" don't really make the water soft as far as fish are concerned, they just, like you said, reduce the likelihood of scale deposits. I read an...
My name is Nathan. I'm currently on my second tank. I moved up from a 5 gallon to a 30 gallon and I'm still trying to find my footing. Thanks for offering a place to learn. I started keeping fish...
Thanks for reading. My current setup and levels:
30 Gallon tank
Regular gravel substrate (2 inches or so)
Some drift wood and a few small plants
Fluval AquaClear 50
Tank was set up and went...
