Thank you Mermaid. It's good to be back.
-
Thanks guys. And I apologize to Triton for hijacking his thread

Monitor your tank closely just to be on the safe side. I suggest you boost your water changes and be sure to quarantine any fish that affected from now on.

Lol... looks like I got some explaining to do.
Well, I quit my job in IT a while ago to run a bar. That didn't do too well for reasons I'd rather not get into. Then I went full time into my...

Hey there Triton. Good to hear from you
-
What has been discounted? Using peer reviewed literature?
-
By all means
Here is just one study done into the correlation of diatomaceous algae, and silicates as a regulating nutrient. It is from a peer reviewed journal via the University of Bergen, Norway. ...
-
Why is wikipedia not a good source of information if said information is cited, and can be followed to the published work? Also, the burden of proof lies with you, yet you fail to provide it.
-
Depending on the substrate used, your results will vary. For me, the worst diatom bloom was after I started using pool filter sand. With weekly water changes after wiping of the glass, it tapered off...

Minus ten, eh?
Please, tell us what research your opinion on the matter is derived from.

Indeed. Many sand substrates release a lot of free silicates into the water column. Rinsing helps a bit but diatom outbreaks after adding new substrate is common. It typically goes away after the...

No hard meaning taken, Red. You know how it gets sometimes.
-
Let's keep it civil, people.
As for diatomaceous algae, light and silicates are only two factors that can cause an outbreak. If the substrate is matured, then lighting is most likely the culprit....
-
Mine stays pretty clean for a while since I use sponge prefilters on the outflow to the sump and my pump intakes to catch the big stuff. The batting is mainly for polishing.
Without the...
-
I use this in my sumps and bucket filters. Works great as long as you keep rinsing it as part of routine maintenance.

As Cliff said, the stress of shipping sometimes causes this issue. Try some bloodworms or other live food to trigger the feeding response in the meantime.
-
It happens to everyone at some point. Sorry about your fish.

Hello. Welcome to the forum.

Most likely Vallisneria nana

I can't tell from the photo. How badly are the fins nipped? Are they completely gone? Fins will heal over time given good water quality and removal of the aggression factor.
While you had no...

Your biggest concern right now is fungal infections. This can happen in a matter of hours, and spreads rapidly. As mommy1 said, clean water is imperative. How big is the fish? What tankmates does it...
