That's what i did. They have been in my tanks for a couple weeks now. One of them kinda looks like its starting to split.

What is the difference in a t5 and a t8? Are the bulbs just different or is it a different fixture?

I haven't set it up yet but i want to make it a planted tank but i really don't want to buy a whole new light.

I have a 30" t8 20 watt light on my 29 gallon. Would it be ok for me to put a higher wattage bulb in it?

As long as it has never been used for sandblasting it shouldn't have any sharp edges. Im pretty sure its coloured the same way marbles are so there shouldn't be any problems with the colour coming...
