The way I do my planted substrates is on the forum. If you do a search of threads started by me, you'll see it on page 2. It's a mix of a heating cable, sand, topsoil and laterite.

They are called Ornate Bushfish. Grow to 2.5 inches. If you google Onate bushfish you'll see what they look like. Better looking more worm and such they get.
