Another option would be a debruyn filter. It is an air driven drip/trickle filter made from a length of vinyl gutter. Lava rock is the bio-media for it.

Such a great week to have off from work! Working outside today brushing on Sikatop. Went to the dollar store for some inexpensive mixing containers and 2 plastic measuring cups.
Here it is ready for sikatop and painting! I ended up making the background in 2 pieces as so to fit it into the tank.
