I usually feed my betta first and he mostly leaves the rest of the food alone long enough for it to get to the bottom.

Mostly I feed them the flake food I feed the rest of my fish and then walk away and then they will sneak out and eat. Sometimes I give them some thawed out frozen blood worms. All my fish go crazy...

I had a couple of gars about 20 years ago but I don't know what kind they were. I just visited a couple of USA sites that said they would sell alligator gars when they were in season.
