Alrighty, as of today ammonia is undetectable! Woo! I've done several big water changes and it seems to have worked. Now to hope it continues to stay that way.
I washed the sand in a big bucket...

Tested the water again today. Ammonia and nitrates have gone up a bit.
Temperature 78 degrees
Ammonia .5 ppm

Okay today's update:
I increased the surface agitation and the salinity. It is now at 1.026. I did a 25% water change. The water looks pretty clear now. Is 25% a good daily water change or should...

Water parameters are:
Temperature 78 degrees
So there's a bit of ammonia and nitrate. I just did a water change.

So I did the transfer 2 days ago and things seem to be okay at the moment. Except for one thing. The water is pretty cloudy. Not sure what's going on there. Any ideas?

What do you guys think of those DIY protein skimmers? I came across an article while researching good skimmers. Just curious about it.
03-16-2015, 07:27 PM
I don't have a protein skimmer yet. Is there a specific brand(s) that works best? Only equipment in it right now is a powerhead and heater.
The tank has been set up for a week with just the sand...

Okay cool. I can't wait to see him swimming around the whole tank. He'll be very happy!

Just to make sure I'm understanding completely, you're saying this can be an immediate switch or are you saying cycle with my current live rock for 3-4 weeks then add clown. All rock curing on the...

The small tank is completely cycled. I've had it set up since last June and added the clownfish in September. So that one's good to go. The new tank is the one I don't have cycled. I was hoping there...

So I would just get the dry rock and add it in with what the live stuff I already have? It would be then become live rock? Does that speed up or slow down the cycling process?
02-28-2015, 08:02 PM
One other question: if I were to get some live rock from a friend's well established tank would that still cause a cycle harmful to my fish? Didn't know if that would make a difference as opposed to...

Right now in that little tank is live rock/sand and the mini filter that came with the kit. With it being a bigger tank I'm going to get a protein skimmer. What do you recommend?
Also, I picked up...

Oh I will! I hope all goes well. :)

Thanks for all the help! :D

I thought he meant that when you partially empty the first take the rock has to stay under water and then move it (probably quickly) to the next tank and keep it under the water line. I didn't take...

"Anything" meaning whatever fish I was going to put in there. The questions are fine. :)
02-24-2015, 11:16 PM
I was thinking of going up to a 15. I have about 8 lbs of live rock in there.
As far as equipment goes it's just the Marineland 5 gallon hex set up. Nothing special. I am honestly surprised how...

Scolded for the whole thing actually. I should have just put shrimp in it or just gone with something bigger like at least a 10 or 15 gallon. Hindsight is 20/20, right? I'm not feeling so bright on...

I need some advice on upgrading my reef tank to a bigger one.
I set up a 5 gallon nano reef 8 months ago and it's doing pretty well. I've been doing freshwater aquariums for about 5 years so I...

I was nervous about doing daily changes. I was concerned it would throw off the parameters. What if the infection has set in? Is it too late or is there a way to fix it?

So a couple weeks ago I noticed my betta had pop - eye. I've been doing small water changes every other day to make sure the water is clean. I admit I had gotten a little lazy and hadn't really kept...

My water parameters:
Ammonia is 0.
Nitrate is 0.
Nitrite is 0.
pH is 6.2.
I do weekly water changes and twice weekly testing. Since it is such a small tank I pay extra attention to it to...

I think they hitch hiked in on a plant I recently bought. There are at least a dozen of them, probably more. This is in my 1.5 gallon cherry shrimp tank. So a dozen in a 1.5 gallon is A LOT. What do...

Both of my Rams have been very light in coloring with prominent stripes. In the past few days I have noticed that one of them is a very very dark gray with yellow belly. The strip over the eye and...
