Me and my friends used to practice sharp shooting with them. We made them out of PVC and you could squirell hunt with them. they hurt your jaws though if you blow in them to much though.

That could be your source. The heat change can be hard on some snails. i wouldnt worry about it. A dead snail here and there is a common sight.
