The tank has about 3/4 inch high gravel. Several plants' root balls are too big for the gravel to cover so you can see sponge around the plants. Can I add more gravel without draining the tank water...

Not sure if you have it in the UK or not but I use Nutrafin PlantGro. It's always worked well for me. It's a liquid not a tablet though.

Most if not all BB is in the filter. However, to keep the small amount that is on the driftwood, make sure it doesn't dry out and get it back in with fish as soon as you can.
