The "kissing" is usually a sign of agression between males. I would keep an eye on the rainbow and watch for any fin/scale damage. For the mating for life part I am not entirely sure.

Yes I would prefer to avoid any loss, which is why I usually always double check with the hobbyists on this site. Everyone is always so friendly and I found they always give the best advice.
