Figure 8's have been kept and bred successfully in BOTH fresh and brackish water. Green Spotted Puffers on the other hand need to be converted to brackish as they mature.

Yep, that old media will speed your cycle up greatly. I'd leave it in there for at least 2 -3 weeks to give the rest of the bacteria in the tank time to catch up. I got a tank cycled in two days...
