Yeah this. It's not ideal living conditions, but it seems the owner at least somewhat knew what he was doing and at least he's decided it's now best for him to get a better home.

I always put water conditioner in, but I do believe I recall something about not needing it. I'm currently out of water conditioner and my krib fry need to eat :P I set in small pieces of algae...

I hate to say it but it's only going to get worse. I severely underestimated my kribs' aggression. Now that the fry are bigger, they swim all over the tank and the parents now guard a larger area....
