I second the Aquaclear brand. I have an AC 50 on my tank and I am really just starting to appreciate how nice they are.

As long as you have enough surface movement with the canister output for the gas exchange to happen you don't need the air stone, but it wont hurt and some people like the look of the bubbles.

LOL, I have the same problem, only it is my Harlequin Rasboras thinking they can eat whatever is flying up the tube.

I think it is funny that a 29 gallon tank is considered small. That is the tank I have and I am keeping everything small also but to a beginner i would see how 30 gallons would be "big".

Just be patient with your Fishless cycle also. I did mine and made a few mistakes and it took longer. Keep the heat high 80-84F when you are starting and just keep the ammonia at the right level....
