I sure can just relied to your message.
Darker substrate will make them look more dark and solid in color.
A lighter color substrate will make them looks pale as they adjust color to blend in there environment.

Yes the finner mesh shouldn't let me shrimp let's through.
I haven't had any in my filter since I've been making them nor have anyone has reports of it.

Here's a 13mm filter guard but with the finner mesh.
That is shrimp baby/fish fry safe.
This one is actually 3" long, customer wanted but it's usually 2.5".
