Thanks for the recommendation, SueD. I liked her video and also like that she's relatively close to us. I think reaching out to her is a great idea. If not corys, she may have suggestions about other...
We have a 10g freshwater tank that currently has 5 guppies in it. We are considering getting some of the smaller cory catfish (pygmaeus, hastatus, or habrosus) to add, but the pH in the...

Thanks, all! I think a tank with RCS to start, and then adding some tiny fish if all goes well sounds like a great plan. I will definitely take the advice about covering the filter intake. I may not...

As promised, here are some pictures of our little guys. It took quite a while - they don't stay still for the camera!
Only one of them has a name yet - this one is Flash:

Cool, I'm up for a shrimp tank! I'd probably put an AquaClear 20 in there if that seems sufficient. What kinds are your favorites?
I haven't found too much at nearby stores - just some ghost...

As the title suggests, I am thinking about putting a 5.5 gallon tank in my office to give it some life. I tested the water out of the tap and came up with:
pH (after letting it sit overnight): 7.5...

Thanks! I'll pick some up when we go to get a refund on the one fish we lost (assuming they agree our water wasn't the problem). I have an eye dropper I use for getting the right level of water for...

I have a few Tetra products. I use AquaSafe Plus each time I do a water change (dechlorinator) even though we have non-chlorinated well water. I also have EasyBalance Plus which says it reduces...

So following the advice on this thread, we picked up 5 male guppies on Thursday night. Used drip acclimation to introduce them into the tank. All was well on Friday and they were actively swimming...

I'm duly convinced! All males it shall be.
How many do you think would be reasonable in there (remembering that there is the one WCMM in there)? I'd love to put some small cory cats in there too...

We've had 6-10 white clouds for a few years now, and though they're peaceful and we liked them, the family is looking to try something different. Since we only have 1 left at the moment, this seems...

Yeah, I was pretty sure that was going to be the recommendation. :)
Makes sense, start with males and enjoy the color show. If we fall in love with them, we can prepare ourselves for the chaos of...

Hi, everyone -
We have a 10g freshwater tank that is currently empty except for a single white cloud minnow. We're planning on putting guppies in the tank and I'm guessing that the minnow is...
Sounds like a good plan!
Yes, I'm shaking it pretty vigorously! Same with the test tube after adding the 10 drops of #2 as indicated.
We have 3 live plants in the tank at the moment, but good advice, maybe we'll take out...
Thanks, all. To follow up on some of the above, I do not use carbon in my HOB filter. Seems I heard years back that it might not be necessary. Instead, I put 2 Biomax in there instead of 1.
Hi, all -
I have a 10g with nothing but a single white cloud minnow and a few pond snails (plus a few live plants), and I'm trying to get the nitrAtes down before adding more fish. Ammonia and...
Thanks - in that case it definitely needs to be replaced since the lot # is 58A0310 (March 2010?).
So I found a water source in our house which definitely does not get softened. Oddly, though, the GH test is still not turning green, so I'm thinking it must be the test kit that is no longer reading...
I know overfeeding is a common rookie mistake, but it appears I've gone too far in the opposite direction based on a few searches of this forum. We have white clouds in a 10g tank (well, we just have...
I did test the garden spout as well as two indoor sources this morning and got the same results for all of them - somewhat lower KH than in the tank (about 200 ppm) and still no reading (no green)...
Hi, everyone -
We have an established 10g tank which housed 8-10 white cloud minnows for several years. Sadly we lost most of them over the span of a month or so recently, and there is just one...

My situation is different, with just a 10g, I tend to leave everything running and do more frequent, but smaller water changes. One 2g bucket is convenient for a 15% weekly water change.

From your first post, I'm confused about whether you are trying to cycle with or without fish. If fishless (recommended), then you will have quicker results with pure ammonia rather than fish flakes...

Congrats on the nitrate spike and zero ammonia - you're on your way. You're doing fine, and just need to wait out the time it takes for that nitrite to drop. For me, it took about 10 days. A couple...
