Just move the syphon around the tank slowly- fishies generally know to stay clear of it. Okay MOST do- my betta insists on checking it out and I have to literally "shoo" him away.

On I generally do a 80% water change every 2-3 weeks. On the 5 g with my dwarf puffer it is more like 75% every 1-2 we:fish: eks.
