That's fine, the bacteria will live in the sponge. Don't wash the sponge too much and always use dechlorinated water to wash it in because chlorine kills bacteria.

Well I managed to get quite a lot of food into her today and she's now swimming around (slowly) and looking a bit better than earlier.
She also produced a number of normal looking feces, so either... -

I think the feces did have the white segments, though I haven't seen her defecate...
