How I got started with aquariums.:
We "adopted" our fish, someone had up and left them sitting outside with no filter, no light, no heater and no food for 2 weeks. Amazingly they survived and were in good nic.
Best advice:
Observation! Not only is it relaxing to watch your fish but you will pick up on problems in early stages
