OMG...I went to my LFS tonight with the view to getting a few more shrimp as I've got maturing juveniles and wanted to mix up the gene pool a little. They had some absolutely stunning species available (I'll have to remember that Thursdays are stock delivery days). The blue jelly shrimp really caught my eye so I got a good deal on 10 individuals.

After drip acclimating them for no less than three hours (strict instructions from the LFS owner to do this variety really slowly) I released some quite bewildered blues into the mix.

Immediately a red cherry X rili hybrid juvenile came over to investigate the new additions and proceeded to rape them! Is this normal shrimp breeding behaviour? I was a bit shocked as the blues didn't seem to know what had hit them. :scry:

Will I get purple offspring? :ssuprised: Probably not.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew if I could keep Malaya- "Caridina cf. babaulti var. 'malaya'" with my bee and red cherry shrimp?
I know both the bee and Malaya are Cardina, but Malaya have different breeding patterns and the interbreeding charts I've seen all seem to give different answers? if the Malaya are listed at all?
Also, if they did interbreed, I've been told they'd be undesirable and ugly... what does that mean? colourless, deformed, infertile?
thankss!

I have some questions about shrimp, the neocardinia specifically. I am looking to get some.
Are the color morphs of cherry shrimp (like yellow and blue) the same species as cherries?
Are the color morphs harder to breed that cherries?
If my tank doesnt have very much plants or moss in it, will the shrimp be ok?
What are some popular neocardinia species, in that they breed the same way that cherry shrimp do?
Will dosing ferts and liquid CO2 affect the shrimp? Ive read what happened to firefly's shrimp tank after dosing the fertilizer and CO2, so im a little worried about that.
Feel free to share experience and insights, for I am a shrimp noob. Thanks

After getting some advice from this forum and other sources regarding my hydra infestation in my 10 gallon home made tank, which sadly claimed the life of one of my reddest berried females I decided to take drastic action and use the Fenbendazole method to get rid of these beasts.
I have decided to document the treatment and share it in the hope that I may obtain further advice and help those in similar circumstances to mine.
I do not not intend this post to be a guide and it should not be followed as one. I am new to the shrimp hobby and this is just a documentation of my situation.
My home made tank with a DIY sponge filter, a U1 fluval filtera single 14 watt T8 light, 25watt thermostat, stick on thermometer, fluval stratum shrimp substrate and dwarf hair grass, anubias congensis and marimo moss balls for vegetation.

<a href="http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/aquariumforum/attachment.php?attachmentid=28588&d=1368627785" title="Name: 20130515_150845.jpg

I used a 1 gram sachet of Panacur worming granules which contains 222mg of Fenbendazole. I used this because it was cheap (£0.53), was enough to complete a treatment and I have found positive reviews which found using this product to fight hydra quite successful for example: http://www.planetinverts.com/killing...and_hydra.html

1 gram of fenbendazole, ground to fine powder, added to 200ml of tank water and shaken. Administered with a 10ml syringe.

For the dose I chose to use 0.05g in 10ml per 10 gallon. The most common dose I found in my internet searches was 0.1g in 10ml per 10 gallon however there was mixed reviews on this dosage, some reported no shrimp deaths at all, others reported minor shrimp fatalities and there were even reports of a total wipe out of the colony. That's why I decided to half the dosage in order to reduce the risk to the shrimp. I also found that it was common to dose every 12 hours for a total of 3-5 doses without water changes in between, this meant that the concentration in a 10 gallon tank would be 0.3g-0.5g and I suspect that this high concentration may be behind the mixed fatality rates. Therefore during my treatment the first dose will be 0.05g in 10ml and then after 12 hours I will do a 25% water change which will theoretically bring the total concentration down to 0.0375g, i will then dose 2.5ml of the fenbendazole solution to bring the total concentration back to 0.05g. I aim to keep this level after every water change to ensure a low risk to the shrimp but a consistent dosage level to kill of the hydra.

I found reports that dosing with Fenbendazole kills nerite snails and as these are particularly helpful in keeping my tank clean, they have been taken out to ensure their survival.

As my filters do not have a compartment for carbon to be added get rid of the remaining fenbendazole once the treatment is completed, I bought the cheapest carbon cartridge i could find, extracted the carbon and placed in some material and sewed it together. After i have finished the treatment I plan to place this behind the outflow in my U1 fluval filter to extract the fenbendazole and after week I will remove this, replace it with a new one and place the snails back into the tank.
I hope to update this thread during the treatment and after to ensure full documentation. Any advice will be much appreciated and thank you for taking the time to read this. :)

Hi everyone,
First off, see my sig for my 10 gallon tank, that I would like to add some shrimp too. My LFS only handles glass (grass) shrimp as feeders mostly, and I would like to buy about 10 or so red cherry shrimp. I've never kept shrimp before, and I have read that the RCS are an easy beginner shrimp.

So it looks like I will be getting the shrimp online, and through the mail. I was wondering where you guys bought your shrimp from. i found a few websites, like this one (http://www.eliteinverts.com/buy-freshwater-shrimp/), but the shipping costs are kinda high for guaranteed delivery of live shrimp....For instance, Elite Inverts wants $34.99 for 10 RCS, and around $35 MORE to guarantee live delivery...

Do you guys alway pay the "guaranteed live" price, or have any of you paid the lower price and "hoped for the best"?...I've searched for maybe a local aquarist club in my area, where I could maybe find some of the RCS locally, but have had no luck...

If you guys have any suggestions/links to where you have bought your shrimp with satisfaction, I would appreciate it if you'd drop me a line here...

Any other pros/cons of buying shrimp online are certainly welcome here, too...

Also, as a side subject, I've read elswhere in the forums where people have started off with a handful of shrimp, and have ended up with dozens after breeding, whether they wanted them or not!...not real sure how that would go over in a 10 gallon tank with fish...any comments on that are greatly welcome too...

Thanks for reading!

Does it vary depending on water conditions and parameters? and is it possible for females to develop saddles but never actually become berried because they dont feel very safe or for some other reason?

I have about 6 females who have had a saddle for about 2 weeks, and the saddles are huge, but I wouldve thought they wouldve become berried by now, but this is my first experience with them so I really have no idea and any comments would be appreciated :) thanks!

Hi, I have a 10gal red cherry shrimp tank with 2 horned nerite snails to held with algae control and I think they look quite nice.
This is my first shrimp tank and I have fell foul of the beginner mistake of overfeeding and I have took steps to rectify this. However as a result of the overfeeding I have an infestation of hyrda which has unfortunately claimed the life of one of my berried females. I have done some research and found that fenbendazole can be used at 0.1grams per 10gallon with a dose every 12 hours to get rid of the hydra but it is known to kill nerite snails.

My plan to reduce the harm to my shrimp and hopefully save my lovely snails is as follows:
1- remove the snails for the whole of the treatment
2- dose at 0.05 grams per 10gallon
3-dose every 12 hours
4- after 36hours do a 50% water change
5- if there is any hydra left repeat steps 2, 3 + 4
6- once all hydra is eliminated add carbon to filter to hopefully get rid of any left over fenbendazole
7- after a week of no treatment and further water changes I hope to reintroduce the snails

Do you think this is an acceptable way to get rid of the hydra with minimal effect on the shrimp and snails and is there anything else that I can do?
I just want to get rid of the hydra as quick as possible with minimal harm to my shrimps and snails.

Hey all,

First planted tank, first aquarium. 20tall with T5HO 6700k & 10,000k bulbs. 50/50 mix of fine black eco-complete and fine black flourite sand. An aquaclear HOB 50gal with polyfiber & ceramic bio media, a small sponge filter.
Java ferns, pennywort, crypt spiralis, hygro kompakt, watersprite, and some riccia floating. Temp is kept at 78.
Fishless cycle completed.
Started getting some algae, so about 1.5 months ago I got 75 RCS. They were the first fauna I put in. They seemed to do very well. Added 5 nerite snails a few weeks later. RCS still doing fine. About two weeks ago I added 10 purple harlequin rasboras & two otos. Now for the past week or so I've been finding at least two dead RCS on the substrate a day. Started testing daily and am getting healthy results-
NH3 - 0ppm
NO2 - 0ppm
NO3 - 5ppm

I did notice that my pH which was steady at 7.5 - 7.6 went up to 8.0 and is holding steady there now. I got a GH/KH test kit as someone told me this was important for keeping shrimp. I don't understand the results though. The KH test resulted in 6 drops, 107.4ppm, GH was 8 drops, 143.2ppm.

The other fish are healthy and active. I can't imagine that rasboras or otos would go after shrimp. And if they did, wouldn't they eat them and not just leave the corpse laying on the substrate? I can't figure out what's going on. Anybody have any insight?

I know crayfish but nada on shrimp they were selling them as whisker shrimp; really long antennae (2 inch body pretty big for a FW shrimp) I only got 1 to see if my tetras would nip his antenna off but he seems ok and happy. He has a red color to his insides but is mostly see through.

Anyone got an idea on what species I actually have. It's like a giant ghost shrimp with really long antennae and long arms with lil claws.
