Well my Otos arrived this afternoon, all 3 came in excellent condition. They're around an inch long and acclimated well. They were put in the tank a couple hours ago and the lights just went out. I'm going to watch them for the next few days. After a few days I'll take some pictures and set up a journal for this tank as it seems a lot is going to change and grow in it :D

Again, I am inclined to chalk this up to genetic alteration. I also lost my long-finned zebra danio, but can safely say that was due to old age, and I had him for slightly over three years, and that's roughly their lifespan, as I understand it.

Parameters: Ammonia 0; Nitrite 0; Nitrates 15ppm; high-range pH 7.6; copper 0; phosphates 1.0.

About a month ago, I got six new White Cloud minnows, and they're all fine and healthy.

I also added more red cherry shrimp, and two of what my LFS calls "blue shrimp" (transparent bodies very faintly tinged blue). These are larger than the cherries. All are thriving and active.

Also, there continues to be a lot of snails, mostly ride-in from plants, and they're all alive and doing their normal snail things.

All of my current plants are green, healthy and growing.

Vacuumed my substrate about three weeks ago, and did the usual water change about a week ago. Filter was cleaned two weeks ago.

The glofish that have died off are mostly ones I've had for awhile, though a couple are newer.

The pattern seems to be that glofish will thrive in the tank for several months, then suddenly, several of them will die off over a span of about a week.

They will start swimming a little wierd first, and go off their food. I can always tell when they're in trouble by this behavior. No lesions or signs of any disease on their skin, and fins appear normal.

Sounds like a genetic thing, to me.

Anyone else notice this pattern in their glofish? Any other ideas as to what could be happening, here?

Thanks for the input.
I have a t8 15 watt 18" aqueon hood on it currently. looking to upgrade to t5 i am guessing with potentially going out an getting a glass top custom cut to my dimensions. currently just have some watersprite that's doing fairly well and a java fern that took a beating when i killed the Black beard algae off it but appears to be slowly coming back with some new growth(lost almost all the original really badly damaged leaves it had ). I am open to some suggestions on new plants. when i do this swap its highly likely before or at the same time i'll be switching out my gravel from the clown blue vomit i currently have to some heritage red turface.

I found a second hand fishtank 80 cm in lenght ,20 cm wide and 25 cm high --40 liters ,around 10 gallons--.and at a much cheaper price than a custom made one (it must be max 20 cm wide so it would fit on my fireplace.)It was sold without the lights.
I intent to make it a planted tank ,using low light plants....so I was wondering what kid of light to get (T8 or T5)and what wattage? I know the rule of thumb is 2 to 4 watt per gallon ,or something like that ,but ,in my case ,if counting the substrate,it only leaves 20 cm in height.I could also move the light higher of course ,but I don't wanna go as far as completely suspending it above the tank.Does the rule of thumb per gallon still applies if light is so close to plants?thx

hello all,

so, my swollen betta is doing worse. he barely passes the white junk out of himself and his belly near the anal area is getting red. i think there is an infection that has presented as a complication with the parasite infestation. this is likely preventing him from passing the remains of the infestation. he doesn't pass anything after getting peas every other day and he has epsom salts in his tank. he is still alert and swimming. it is very unlikely it is dropsy - so please don't introduce that commentary haha. no pineconing, localized, and been ongoing too long - he'd be dead by now.

so, after finishing his second prazi treatment tomorrow, i'd like to wait a day and then give him the antibiotic tout de suite! i am not going to have time to order something online, so anything i could find at a decent LFS or even better, petsmart, would be appreciated!

So on my 55 I have two HOB filters, a Aquatech 30-60 and a tetra whisper 60.

Now... keeping a budget in mind, I plan to tweak my stock a little, and will most likely be overstocked... so I'm sitting here wondering if I should replace those two filters with AC 70's. I could probably swing the upgrade (including selling mine) for around $100.

Questions:
Are the AC's quieter than most HOB?
Would the AC70's be a significant upgrade?
Would they actually reduce electric usage? (more efficient at 6W? I can't find specs on others) - FOUND, each are currently 9W, so it'd be 2/3's of the power I use now
Would just adding a canister be better, and if so what would be best choice?

Thanks
