Earlier I asked my friend (through PM) for help with my betta ripping up his fins. Here's the conversation:

***Beginning of Messages***
ME: My new betta was pretty young when I got him, and his fins grew really fast, now he tries to play and whips his fins so hard that he keeps ripping them. His tail fin has ripped farther than its grown!

I thought it was just finrot at first, but even with aquarium salt treatment he keeps ripping them up! Someone on yahoo answers said that they will heal in time, but I don't think my betta is going to wait for that before he de-fins himself. He had really gorgeous deep blue fins and now he resembles the dragon-fin betta more than a deltatail!

Do you have any ideas? He's acting happy, but if he does get the actual finrot it won't have far to go before its body rot. He's literally missing two chunks out of his tail!

I'm sorry to bother you with this, but I'm drawing a blank as to help him heal! He even smacks himself in the head with his fins sometimes!

FRIEND: im sorry to hear that, sounds like something in the tank is stressing him out. is he solo? you might want to start a thread here and get the betta experts opinions

ME: He is solo. He has a habit of whipping his fins whenever I look his direction... My brother has a female that behaves the same way, only her fins are a lot shorter and don't rip.

He gets more hyper at feeding time, I have an alarm set and he knows that it's time to eat when he hears it. I used to have a betta hammock in his tank but removed it so that he couldn't hurt himself on it, but he keeps ripping his fins anyway...
***End of messages***

Someone on yahoo dubbed this behavior as the betta playing a game of "Whip It" and damaging his own fins. All of the decor in his tank is smooth and there's only a fake silk plant and a "betta log" anyways. He didn't have any trouble while his fins were still shorter, but as they grew, they started getting tattered! I've been treating him for finrot with aquarium salt for a week now (maybe a week and a half) but he keeps whipping around and damaging his own tail.

I want to put him in a larger tank (he's currently in a 1gal so I can treat his fins and because he was small when I got him) but I have to wait until next month to afford one.

Here's a pic of what he has done to himself in the past 72 hours:

my first post here. good day everyone.

so, i have one betta who is extremely active and all over his tank doing his thing. the other one i recently rescued from a neglectful owner. he is extremely lazy. one of his things is purposefully going over to the submersible filter (aqueon 10) intake and resting his tail flat against it and letting it hold him there while he rests. he even did this in the old crappy made for children plastic tank he was in before this, which had a typical round stick like filter intake. it is not hurting him and he is perfectly healthy. the filter is one of the lowest flow ones there is, so it's not like it is forcefully sucking him next to it.

he is a constant rester, resting as well on his fake betta leaf and sleeping at night in his hidey hole. anyone else have a betta with this personality? specifically, the filter fetish thing he has going on?

Hi everyone.
I have about 8 males that I have raised from fry's . :fish: They are 11 months old. I have had successful spawns before , but now that I'm using my bettas they will not wrap the female long enough so she will release her eggs. I have left them together for hours ( watching all the time to make sure he isn't to aggressive). I use different females and it's the same almost every time. :scry:
He seems more concerned about keeping his bubblenest in good shape that taking care of the female. They have been conditioned and both are ready, she has her egg spot and he builds the nest. The female will go back to him over and over , the male will wrap her briefly then he will be motionless which she should be doing, then he goes back to building his nest:ssmile:
Appreciate any advice . have great success raising angelfish but betta's are a different story :hmm3grin2orange:

I am, for all accounts, a Betta Guru. Though I only have two at present, I have had over a lifetime, hundreds of them. Back in the day, I've kept a rotating stock of 50 and was a breeder, and I've learned something......

Doesn't matter what you know. I currently have one Betta, that is like three I've had in the past. No matter WHAT you do, how good the maintenance, housing, filtration........ the bugger is ALWAYS sick. My current lilting violet is Tiberius, and its driving me to drink. I've had him well over a year and a half, and with pretty good regularity, he has fin rot. Nothing in this tank has changed, not the parameters, water quality, filtration, temperature, feeding, nothing. Once every two months, his fins are falling off. He gets treated with the best care and meds, and he will heal up, look great, and a few weeks later.......... there it is again. Fine one day, next day, the fins are literally falling off.

And so it goes. Fine Friday, go away for the weekend, come home Sunday night........ fin rot. Shred up, stringy fins, and now an extra helping of pop-eye! Of course, he is being treated with tender loving care, good medications, and tank maintenance. Its ridiculous. Its not my pet sitter doing anything either, she's been "Aqua-sitting" for years now, and is well versed in fish care.

This has happened in the past when I had scores of Betta, and over that time I've had three, that had this same scenario. I have come to the conclusion that some Betta through breeding or other factors, are just extremely prone to illness. I obviously don't breed these guys when I come across them, no matter how pretty they are. I wish I had a way to find out the fish genetics behind this, but since I can't I just find it as frustrating as the get all.

I do sympathize with those, especially new Betta keepers that just happen to pick the straw in the lot, and end up with one like Tiberius. To be told you are doing something wrong, when you know you aren't, is sooooooooo upsetting.

For now, I am treating him and monitoring. However, I do want other Betta owners to know, if they are experiencing this, Its not you, its the fish.

Mom's betta, in 5 gal tank with live plants and driftwood and black plant sand. All peremeters are excellant.
For last 2 mo betta has been only laying on the bottom of the tank and never comes up for food. Many times thought dead but when you come near him he'll finally swim away only to go back to spot. Not lying as normal fish would or even sick betta (going on nose) ... he is lying FLAT on his side as if dead.

Bright red and is starting to lose color. No telling how old he is. At least over a yr.

Have even tried throwing 2 guppies in just to see if he was bored. He didn't even blink at them so we put them back in original tank for them.

Usually I can figure out what i wrong but not on this one.
