Has anyone used all pupose fert tabs from Aquarium Plants.com? I was given a free bottle due to a delay in shipping, along with a bottle of Iron tabs. Also are the Iron tabs good to use? I have about 10 Amazon Swords, 5 Jungle Vals, 2 Java Plants, and 3 Corkscrew Vals. And does using ferts increase your Nitrate levels any?
Thanks all who reply,

ID this plant please! I've had it for over 2 years, and all that it has done is grown to the size it is now and stay green. It hasn't sent out shoots or anything, although it has been under pretty low light with no ferts or anything. The only things I can think it is are dwarf sag or some kind of small sword. <a href="http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/aquariumforum/attachment.php?attachmentid=28553&d=1368384713" title="Name: UP (unidentified plant).jpg
Here's my tank. Pretty plain. Have the fake plants merely for my pleco's hiding spots.
I'm ordering some dwarf hairgrass, java moss, and water wisteria today from my LPS. (Ordering different kinds over the next month, if you have suggestions let me know) I'm also hoping to pick up a good chunk of driftwood for a center piece. Getting some pool filter sand on Friday too.
I'm able to pick up some really good rocks from a local beach as well, big/small, flat/thick.

How should i go about decorating and arranging the plants/rocks? I've been wanting to create a carpet of hairgrass too.

Also, i don't plan on using a co2 system. I'll use whatever ferts i have to but i'm going for low maintenance plants. I know hairgrass needs a lot but i'll find a way. I have an anubias in the front of my tank and it's rhizome was whiteish when i got it now it's dark green. So that's coming along well too.

So hello everyone! I have been running my 29gal planted tank for a few months and I feel its time to upgrade to something bigger, the 45 Arch. I am curious as to what kind of substrate to put down. I am currently using a pea-sized gravel with first layer laterite on the bottom initially but after a few gravel vacuums it got all mixed in anyways. I also have a small sand pit (about 6"x12") that is being separated from the gravel by a piece of 1/4" acrylic about 3" high. I like the sand for my cories, they lost their whiskers and have not gotten them back since, but also the sand looks pretty nice too. My tank is fully planted with rotala indica, micro sword, a melon sword, a marbled sword, a large bunch of water sprite, and a struggling bunch of cabomba.

I want to move all of these guys over to the 45 Arch. I want to look into a different substrate. I was hoping to see if anyone had advice on any of these types of substrates-

Flourite
Gravel + Laterite
Sand
Potting Soil
Other?

Thanks everyone!

I did try to search to see if this is already addressed, but now I'm giving up and just asking. :)

I have black gravel for substrate in my 55 gal tank. I decided to plant the back half of one side. If that goes well, I plant to plant the other side as well.

Apparently, I didn't have a deep enough layer of gravel, because even with robbing some from the other half of the tank, I still couldn't really get the plant roots buried well. And I have read that they should be in at least 3" deep of substrate. So I'm thinking that I need to buy more black gravel, and maybe it would work well to just take cupfuls of it, and gently pile that over and around each plant, so that the roots are not so exposed.

My real question is, do I have to use more black gravel, since that is what is underneath, or is there a better substrate I could add on top of the gravel, around each plant, that would be better for the plant growth? (I'd want it to be dark. I like the color of the black.)

I've been reading a lot about different plant substrates, and about Deep Sand Beds, and I'm wondering if a deep sand bed could be made by covering over the gravel with sand and letting it sink down in?

What are your thoughts about this idea?

I am considering doing a lightly planeted tank. Could Vallisneria Americana and Hygrophila difformis survive with out ferts. Also if not, are there even any that can? And if their are please recommend some. It is a 55 gallon tank(48Lx12Wx21H inches) With 2 54 watt t5ho bulbs 8 inches above the lip of the tank(what I believe to be medium lighting). Also they should be relatively hardy as I have firemouth cichlids(I know they dig) it seems like they don't eat plants but I have found a couple of people who say theirs did.
