Also, they sometimes dance with each other it looks like while staring at each other. It's insane and fun to watch.

One of them changes colors all the time to a darker color and the other does not. I am not sure what is going on.

Salvini tank unexpected surprise

I have a 50g breeder with 5 Salvini cichlids. I rescued these fish when they were 1.5" from an African cichlid tank at the LFS at least six months ago. maybe eight. They were getting pretty beat up in there but a little TLC took care of the nipped fins and tails. As sals are very aggressive toward each other, I knew I could not keep them together long term. I planned on growing them out and selecting the best one or pair(if one formed) and rehoming the rest.

I have been out of state working for the last few weeks. Needless to say I was worried what was going on with my tanks while I was gone. I got home late last night and immediately checked on them. To my dismay, one of the Salvinis was laying dead on the bottom of the tank. I quickly got it out and did a huge water change. After that I tested and levels were good, so I did waterchanges on the other tanks and went to bed.

This morning when I was looking at the tank, I noticed that one of the Sals was chasing and picking on two of the others. I figured the time had finally come to make my choice and move the others. As I was contemplating my options as to where to move them, I glanced over at the tank and noticed a big swarm of fry. WOHOO!

AT that point I knew I had to do something quick. I netted out the two that were getting beat up, which involved tearing the whole tank apart, removing all the decor and spending 15 frustrating minutes chasing them around with two nets. Finally I got them and placed them in the 90g temporarily. Luckily I got the correct two out. After replacing all the decor I am watching the pair in the 50g guarding the 30-50 remaining fry. They are already free swimming and wandering around the tank. I figure they must have spawned soon after I left on my trip. Now the only thing in that tank are the Salvini pair, their fry, two BN plecos and a clown pleco. The sals do not bother with the plecos at all.

Hopefully soon I will be able to get some pictures.

Albino Convict and Firemouth Cichlids.

Hi all, we're extremely new to fish keeping, and we have a couple of questions. We started out with just the female albino convict, after our daughter brought home a small tank full of them, and only the one survived her neglect before we realized what was going on. Anyway, we felt sorry for the poor fish and got her two companions, a male and a female firemouth. Obviously we had no idea which fish were male and which female when we started out, but have since figured it out. We got them a bigger tank and all new equipment and decorations, and they seem to have settled in well, the old tank was lid and lightless and the equipment was inadequate for its size. We are trying to find out as much as we can about these fish and how to care for them properly, as fast as we can, so any help we can get would be appreciated. The tank they are now in is a 125 litre, so they have plenty of room, the firemouths are about four and a half, and five centimetres long, the albino is about 6cms. The female albino, since moving to the bigger tank just over a week ago, has begun to act strangely. She fought constantly with the firemouths in the smaller tank, though she never actually bit them. In the bigger tank she began to court the male, it was slow, but she chased him about and even allowed him to feed next to her. She wouldn't allow the firemouth female out of the corner, though the firemouth female comes out to feed. Now, for the last couple of days, the albino is guarding a small tower at one end of the tank. We get the feeling she may have laid eggs in there, but we can't see anything when we look, and she won't allow either of the firemouths out of the corner. She did have a bright orange underbelly and upper body, but this is now disappearing. She is clearly more aggressive, she darts out to attack me when I look at her, and doesn't leave the tower for more than a few seconds, though she hasn't actually bitten or harmed the firemouths. I don't really want to breed the convict, I'm not even certain the male has done his part, but will moving the tower to look or remove any spawn stress her out? Also, I've been wondering about placing a divider between the albino and firemouths, to allow the firemouths to come out from the corner. I don't want to do this, I'd like the three of them to be company for each other, but I feel so sorry for the little female firemouth. Any suggestions?

Wart-Looking Spots and Aimless Behavior

150-gal tank
Various fish including an Oscar and some Convicts
Substrate is currently large rocks, with no gravel - we're fighting an algae bloom and due to repeat blooms I decided I was going to run the tank without gravel to give the algae no place to settle and grow. I've been told this was probably a bad idea.
Filters include an under-tank sump with gravity drain and a hang-on filter on the back (I think it's rated for a 50 gallon tank, but I just threw it on there for a little extra filtration).

Our Flowerhorn, Kessie, recently developed rough-looking wart-like spots around her face. We've been dealing with a really bad algae bloom and haven't been able to see the fish very clearly for the past few weeks. I'm pretty new to fish-keeping, if anyone wants to know why it's taken this long to clear up the tank. Anyway, she's behaving sort of aimless, and while it's likely I'm over-reacting it seems like she runs into the glass a lot. Any ideas? We've got her quarantined, and tomorrow I'm going to buy this cure-all fungus/parasite medication I was recommended today by the local pet store (non-corporate).

To note, we just recently replaced all of the gravel with rocks from outside (we didn't boil them, much to the horror of the guy who got me into fish-keeping). I've done complete water changes two or three times in the last two months. I'm going to be doing another this weekend, and will be adding new gravel (filtered and boiled, this time) and will begin adding Daphnia regularly to control the algae bloom (we bought 3 500-count kits from a seller on Amazon).
I was leaning towards Convicts because I heard they're some of the easiest fish to keep and breed easily. Any suggestions?:fish2::fish2:
