I am going to be breeding class n endlers. This is my first step into line breeding.

1) setup

1 - 120 gallon
1 - 30 gallon sump
- 200gph pump
- 200 bio balls
- sponge filter
4- 10 gallons
2- 5 gallons
1 - 20 gallon

I am planing on using the 120 gallon as a colony breeding tank. I am unsure of how many fish that i will be able to sustain in it. It is a 120 gallon long. So there is 1440 square inches of surface space. From what i have read up on guppies they will need 3 square inches of surface water. So i would be able to have a colony of 480 endlers? I want to keep a colony so i have a large pool of genetic diversity.

With the other tanks used for the line breeding.

Will 30 gallon sump be large enough for the 190 gallons of tanks? Should i turn up the amount of water flow in the sump?
or should i use another 20 gallon as a sump? So i have 50 gallons of sump. or will the extra 20 gallons not matter?

Will i still need to supply air to all the tanks? If so what is an economical way of pumping air to all the tanks.

I am planing on automatic water changes. Water Solenoid Valve with a timer to turn on once an hour to allow water in and out. - power goes to valve it opens power is cut it closes. I want to set it up to add a gallon and drain a gallon every hour.

SO every week i will add 168 new gallons over a slow amount of time or would it be better to do less or more? once every half an hour i could add 336 gallons of new water every week. The water will be added slowly and drained slowly so there will be no shock to the fish.

My 2 main concerns are the health of the fish and biological diversity. As well as the maintenance time. Is there anything else i can do to combat these 2 issues that i have missed. Please let me know if you see problems with any part of this system.

Hi All
I'm new to this forum, and new to keeping fish. I have got an AquaOne AR850 tank (about 40 gallons/180 litres), which I have had planted up and settling for about 3 weeks and all was fine. Everything was testing zero, pH 7.8 and steady, and plants doing fine. I then introduced 8 Zebra Danios, and waited for the Ammonia to start rising, but in 2 weeks, it has only gone up to 0.25. But also in those 2 weeks, I am now getting brown algae on all my rocks and broad leaf plants, as well as the inside of the glass. Most of the plants are putting out new growth which looks healthy, but the leaves with the algae are dying off - some going black. The Danios all seem fine. I don't think I am overfeeding them - I give them a small pinch of flake food 3 times a day, which is all consumed in a feeding frenzy at the surface within a minute or so - none of it ever makes it to the bottom of the tank. The lights (standard setup for the 850) are on 12 hours per day for the plants - maybe that is too long?
I have read that some tanks suffer with brown algae during startup and that it may settle of its own accord once the cycle gets established, but I am concerned that my Ammonia just isn't rising at all, so there is nothing to kick start the creation of Nitrites and Nitrates (both still testing zero). Should I be thinking of adding a few more fish, or just sit tight until the Ammonia rises? And in the meantime, what should I do about the algae and plants?
Thanks in advance for any advice
Grum.

I also have a question about starting up these tanks. last time i did this 2 years ago i had plants long before the fish arrived, now i don't have any plants so should i wait to get my fish until i have bought some plants to stick into the tanks?
I have quite a few miles to go to nearest aquarium store so don't want to go just to get a few plants to come back in a few weeks to buy new fish.

Hi all,

New guy here. Great forum. I (perhaps foolishly) jumped the gun and purchased this light for my first tank in 16 years. This time I will trying my hand at plants as well as fish. I will stick with the easy stuff. I have tried searching forum but so far have not found any info on the version 2 of this light.

The tank setup so far consists of:

29gallon glass tank with flat glass canopy
Eheim 2213
Hydor ETH 200
3 bags of Eco Complete

The tank is not located where it will be touched by direct sunlight.

Here are the specs on the light:

BeamsWork Power 400 V2
24 - 30" Aquarium LED Light
Version 2 - 65% brighter than the original version.
Dimension: 23" X 5" X 1"
78x HQ 0.1W LED (72x 10000K daylight, 6x 460nm Actinic)
810 Lumen
Super slim housing in black finish.
Full Splash guard
2 mode ON / OFF power switch: "I" mode - ACTINIC LED on only. " II " mode - All daylight and actinic LED on.
Extend-able bracket . 30" max lenght.
AC110-240V AC adapter.
CE certified.

Will this light work for me or am I asking for an algae bloom? If need be I can bite the bullet and get a FugeRay or whatever else is recommended.

Thanks in advance. If there is anything else I am missing in my setup I am all ears.

However I get wetness at back of my tank on the outside and it makes the background look patchy and horrible and also not good for the wall etc. I have some open at the rim of tank so have tried to use foil etc. to cover the spot however as the 'mist' is so strong it is not sucessful. I have about given up!

Any suggestions I havn't thought of?
Thanks a ton.
PS - it is my 29 gallon freshwater with barbs.

I purchased a 135 gallon reef ready tank with two glass overflow boxes. When I removed the black acrylic overflow covers I saw that I have two holes (one larger one smaller) in each overflow boxes. I was planning on using the overflow box on the left for the intake (going to go with a Durso standpipe) and the overflow box on the right for the return. So, what are the other holes for?

Next question - am I supposed to silicone the overflow covers to the glass? If I don't hold them up against the glass there is a gap at the top between the glass and the cover.

So I got this 55 gallon tank from a friend. The tank is like 35 years old and has been empty for like 20. Anyway, I've bought and returned like 4 hoods cause they aren't big enough. The inside of my frame is like 46 7/8" and 11.5". I have bought the 24 x 12 hoods and they literally all fall in the water. I got a glass hood today that was literally 11" wide and was labeled as a 24 x 12. also, all of these hoods are 23" long, which leaves a lovely 2" crack in the middle. Is this normal? I finally found a hood that sort of stays put at walmart of all places, but it still has the 2" crack. Is there such a thing as a frame that goes over the tank frame to make the hood holders wider? I'm completely lost.

Evening folks,

Before I begin a fishless cycle in a new tank (Fluval Roma 125), I'd like to ensure that the filtering system I have in place is sufficient enough for my fish. I'm planning on housing 2 three month old Black Moor Goldfish.

A Fluval U3 internal filter came with the aquarium and is recommended for use up to 40 gallon, however I believe Black Moors are very "dirty" fish in general and I'm wondering whether to invest in an additional Fluval U3 or purchase a U4 which are good up to 65 gallon. I'm planning on upgrading the tank in the future, so a U4 would be ideal but I don't want to overwhelm the fish in the current setup. The U4 looks to be a large unit and I'd rather not use up much needed space, having said that the water quality and the health of the fish are far more important.

Many thanks for your input.
