On December 6, having procured a female from the Brooklyn Aquarium Society, I successfully mated the Blacl/Grey Thunder Flowerhorn. Their preliminaries were very short compared to many other strains: 2 days of fairly exhaustive dancing, and 2 days of coordinated digging. They blocked of one end of their sleeping tunnel with stream pebbles thus turning it into a cave, and cleaned the back front rock surface and lowered it almost to the tank bottom. At 4 AM, about 500 eggs were laid and fertilized, spread out allver the foot square black rock. They also widened the cave door. They were fanning the eggs which seemed to be doing weel. About 500 hatched on othe eve of Feb 6. The pair rather mysteriously gasthered them all up in their mouths and hid them in the closed off clave they constructed, and did not return them to their birthplace until the 13th. Hopefully juvenile Black Flowerhorns will be avaiable this winter!. I believe this may be the first documented breeding of this strain in the USA.
