View Full Version : hi everyone
Hello all you aquaria boffins how are you all this evening? My husband and I have recently started looking after tropical fish. Our guppy is on her thirs batch of babies. It was a fascinating experience watching her give birth!!
I have a query for anyone who knows.....a few day ago i fed some dried krill to the fish....today i have live krill in the tank!!! I have no pebbles on the floor of the tank so you can clearly see it scurrying around in there. This would suggest that it has survived the freeze dried process and being shut in an airtight pot for two years.....has this happened to anyone else???
There is no way the krill could have survived the freeze drying process. Can you get us a pic so we can identify your wee critter for you?

welcome to a.c. i seriously doubt that it's a krill. no way it survived as stated by CAF
that would be my response but it did honestly come out of the krill pot...it floated around for a day none of the fish touched it....I will try and get a pick but it is tiny and almost clear but i will have a go....

Welcome aboard the forum!:19: A picture would be nice to see if it is actually a krill.

Do you have live plants in the tank? Driftwood? Where did you get your substrate? I would bet 5000 points that you have a hitchhiker that came in one of those IF you do...
no plants just a filter and bubble stone we set it up as a nursery tank for the baby guppies so they weren't born in the main tank so it is empty of everything except fish!! and has been for the 2 months we 've had it. I am trying to get a picture but my camera is not brilliant i will keep trying..
Do you have dragonflies in your area? I just had a really nasty thought...
not in the immediate area of the house no
not in the immediate area of the house no
So no worries about it being a dragonfly larvae then, they are predatory and will eat the fry... Can you describe the critter? To my knowledge krill are a saltwater species only. However there are innumerous other inverts this might be...
I can't get a picture. Basic description...light grey almost clear, it is about 6 mm long. shrimps shaped body 8 legs along the body with about 4 or 6 feeler type fronds from the front. i saw it in my hand while putting the krill in but never gave it a thought. i have had a look through the rest of the pot but there is not another one.
Hmmm... doesn't sound like a Scud, but it might be... Keep trying for the pic. I'd be interested in seeing it.

To put a pic up, you need to place it on a photo storage site like photobucket or flickr. These should be free. You would then link the file to here by using ' URL Link with.jpg at the end
not great its the best we can get...........2759

Some sort of larvae.... its not a shrimp or scud.

I'd say - yank it out, grow it in a seperate container and then use it as bait for fishing!
