when i went to petsmart today, i found some small purple and black cichlid, something close to the name demonsi, for $99.99 each. what makes them so pricey?

Its probobly a hybrid. Hybrids are sterile, making them harder to come across, making the price go this way ^.

Makes me wish I could bred weird hybrids for a living.

man, thats alot for a tiny cichlid (it was the size of a small snow white soccolofi).

Hybrids are not always mules... TRUST me... Most likely it was a F0 or wild caught fish that is relatively rare...

Try $715 for this guy
http://www.livefish.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_80&products_id=1709

Also check some of the other prices on the site, that us Aussies can pay for Cichlids

I think CAF was pointing out the huge difference in price over there for that particular fish.

Still I would not even pay $150 for a fish.

Here is a few more:

I guess they made this high so not very many people buy it due to it's requirements.

Its mainly Cichlids mate, and I agree, it does suck.

Once a pet comes into my life, they are my family, so I would never part with them, no matter the price, but see the Red Devil and Oscar in my avator, at there size, a market value over here would be at least $AU75 each, that is in the country at least, in case other Aussies challenge that. Of cause, we did not pay that, The red devil at about 2" was $AU8, the Oscar at about 3" tops $AU12. they are now approx, Red devil 9", Oscar 10".

TowBoater

Here a 12" oscar is 25$. Don't know bout red devil though. You can get a 2" oscar for like 5$ here also.

That IS most definately what I was trying to do. The Aussie government is to blame for your high prices mate. They have got to be one the most difficult govs to try to import anything through and the costs are outrageous, which is one reason why you pay so much for fish.

Fishguy2727

That is actually a reasonable price, at least for the high end of the size range they listed, for the redtail catfish.

Here (http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwarowana&1191178179) is a link to a much more expensive fish. $3500 for a red arowana.

Here (http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwflowerhorn&1190987400) is another, $3000 for a flowerhorn.

And if you are looking for high end koi, save up even more.

Unreal fishguy, I as you may know by now am a real tightwad, I satrated of saying, I wont pay more than $5 for a fish, then went to $10, $15, now I am considering paying $25 for a smaller breed of pleco, to control alge in our 120G, I have preached on here before about small tank owners considering bristlenose instead, but do not want to do that with our Oscar, as I read a thread on a cichlid site, and seen the pics, of an oscar choking on a brisltenose, due to the defensive spines they throw out.

i can see paying 100+ dollars for a pleco (ive had a few that much), but for a small cichlid i cant see it

Fishguy2727
09-29-2007, 12:13 AM
If you look at some of the pics of some of these cichlids, I can see spending that much.

Most I have spent on a cichlid was a pair of wild discus a long time ago ($70 each), but that was a xmas gift for my dad's tank. Most i spent on one for me was $40 (one of the current peacocks).

Dave66

Most I've ever spent was for six Pseudolithoxus tigris (L 257). All in all it was nearly 3,000 for those fish. Still got them, and they've bred a couple times, thus have paid for themselves.

Ever hear of Koi? :ezpi_wink1:

http://www.coloradokoi.com/koi_pricing.htm

Just average prices, it's not unusual for people to pay up to a million dollars for them.

Fishguy2727
10-02-2007, 02:09 AM
Even if it is not unheard of, I do not say that it is 'not unusual' for people to spend a million dollars on koi. I suspect that those are rare instances mainly in Japan with only the best of the best koi.

Spending a million on the perfect koi happens quite often, usually by dedicated (and annonoymous) collectors. Although, there are not that many that can fetch that price, many Koi at the All Japan Combined Nishikigoi Show fetch prices in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Fishguy2727

Which is my point, it is not exactly common. It is a rare thing by a few people out there for only the best of the best koi.

I depends on what your defenition of rare or common is. But that's irrelevant, even if it happens on a daily basis or only once a year, Koi are traded at phenomenal prices and the one million dollar mark does get hit.
