Ok so as not to hijack someone else thread I am moving this discussion here.

In your expierence, do your Tetras, no matter the species, school in odd or even groups?

Think about it carefully... Was one always behind the group trying to catch up, but being left behind?

So, with that in mind... Even or Odd?

mine are all even. I have had my glowlights for about a year and well i have always had 10 of them and they all are always together. And all of my other tetras are like that too....well actually all of my fish are like that. lol.

My neon tetras are always off in other directions. They don't school together often at all. I've got 6 of them.

Never heard of killing something to make an odd number, only killing to make an even number.

I think part of it might be singling out the "weak-link" so to speak.

Wait, who kills what to make odd numbers??

mine are a mix, the biggest school of tetras i have is 12 serpaes in my 55g, and ive counted 9 together and 3 to the other side of the tank, and sometimes 2 groups of 6

I couldn't answer since I don't have tetras. :( Interesting post though.

I see mine a lot in evens but then again when they aren't they are in odds.

That didn't make a lot of sense but they are in odd pairs more than in even.

i agree with zackish, i just looked at my serpaes again and they were in a few odd groups

To my experience, depends on the size of the school. I have tetra schools in the hundreds, and they flow together like a sinious coil. Smaller schools, like 18 rosy tetras, wander around in twos and threes foraging. When not, they school.

Just want to keep this thread going. We have over 800 active members and I would like to see how many of us will participate. Thanks for looking.

Our 800 active probably comes down to 50 that are here really often.

But about the tetra's.....I was not able to vote either way. I've had 12 in a group, 9 in a group and been down to 3, 5, 8, etc. I see no difference at all. When fish swim in a line, one of them has got to be first, second, fourth or last. They can't all be first.

I just updated my silver dollars from a school of 6 to a school of 9. Still no difference.

LOL I guess I should have included a "Neither" option in the poll...

LOL I guess I will go ahead and eat crow...

Attention all members of the Aquatic Community. I hereby announce my apologies to Fishguy2727. I have been unable to back or refute my claims of the even or odd occurance of schooling behaviour in Characins. I therefore invite you all to ridicule me for the remainder of the day.

It takes a good person to apologize and I always commend a person who can do so so my hats off to you.

But that leaves me with one question? Do fish count? And how can they count without little fingers? LOL I know, they use little fins! ta-da

Thank you. I think shared expierences are what make this hobby so fun. It is one reason I champion aquaria websites and societies. If you are not a member of a fish club, join one. If there isn't one in your area, or if you disagree with one's policies, create your own. There is power in knowledge and numbers, so pool both!

It is what I figured.

This is why sample size is so important.

When I re-populated my tank after my cycle completed I had 6 Neon and 6 glowlight. One of the Neons qickly disappeared and I noticed another being aggresive. But when they are aren't off doing their own things there is one Neon which hides, making the school even. All my Glowlights seem to stick together most of the time. Again, even 6....

Those little gold tetra's I recently purchased are awesome but I have no idea of how many I have. Man, they are soooo tiny and go like the wind. It would take 300 of them to make a show as a group. I think I have 40 but who can count them!
