Ok so i have come to the conclusion that i need to upgrade the filter on my tank since i have introduced my cichlids. I do water changes 1 a week and i clean the gravel about every 3 weeks. About a day after i do a water change the water gets murky looking like my filter isnt working. What would be the best filter for my tank. It is a 29 gallon with plants. I'm not looking for something radically priced but not something cheap either. I want one that works good though.

Canister would do it. Pros - more powerful, more media, can be out of sight.
Cons - they are more expensive that HOB waterfalls.

i got a couple bio wheels on my 46 that work awesome, i would have gone with canister from the start if i had know i was gonna end up payin that much anyway, but nonetheless they are fairly cheap and do a very good job

I have a bio wheel on it already and i just doesnt seem to cut it. Ill look into canister filters. What are some name brands for the canisters?

Just about every major manufacturer of aquarium products makes them. It all depends on your preference on which company. I use Hagen.

A good HOB option would be an Aquaclear. They are not expensive, quiet, work well, easy to maintain and offer a good variety for custom filter media. I have the AC110 on my 29g and works fantastic. You should be able to get away with the smaller AC70, but I wouldn't go any smaller than that.

I have looked around at filters and i think i am going with the Eheim Ecco Comfort Canister Filter- 2234 from bigalsonline.com. It is $79.99 through this store and looks like a good filter. It's good for up to 35 gallon tanks.

"The Eheim Ecco external canister filter is self priming, has a compact design and is easy to use it also comes complete with accessories and media to get you started. The Ecco Comfort filter provides 3 types of filtration: mechanical, biological and adsorptive. With proper media set-up a long service life can be expected, with 3 to 6 months between cleanings. Good for aquariums up to 35 U.S. gallons. Media included: 1 liter Ehfisubstrat, 1 carbon pad, 1 fine filter pad, 1 coarse blue pad, 2 media trays."

Aquaclear 50 or Better yet an Aquaclear 70. My 29 has a Aquaclear 70 and the water is always crystal clear.
