im about to start a 30g lightly planted tank and was curious if I could house a betta with either angelfish or gouramis? the compatibility chart at liveaquaria says caution for both... I'f they're introduced at the same time without a chance to form territories, would that help? would gouramis do better since they're both labyrinth fish? or does that even matter?

Bettas in community tanks are really hit and miss. The personalities vary so greatly between each individual fish, there is no real sure way to say "yes" or "no". If you have your heart set on it, the only advice I can give you is to monitor the tank VERY carfully for the first couple weeks. If any problems begin to arise, you need to make arangments for different accomodations.
The fact that they are both labyrinth fish carries no weight.
Welcome to the A.C.!

id be very cautious about mixing a betta in with other fish, i had mine in my community tank for a couple of weeks no problems what so ever then one morning i got up to find reddy (name thanks to my 5 yr old) dead.
i was watching him all the time previous to this and i hadnt seen any trouble or agression at all.
i have tetras, 2 baby angels, guppys, swordtails, danios, bristlenose plecos, a clown pleco and a baby sailfin pleco (to be moved to another tank as soon as he's bigger), in my tank.
i dont know which fish decided he had to go as he was dead already when i found him, all i do know is i wont be putting another betta in that tank.

I would highly advise against placing a betta in with other semi-agressive fish. Unless you enjoy fighting (and I'm sure the loser doesn't), I wouldn't put in an angelfish with a betta. Maybe for some it works and it's definitely a personality thing with bettas. The one I have is great with the community fish (cories, mollies, platys) and the other one I had didn't care for fancy guppies, especially female.

So sorry to hear about Reddy. Hope your 5 yr old was not to upset by it. Poor Reddy!
