Well my 20g and 40g planted tanks are overflowing with red cherry shrimp.

The weather has gotten a bit cooler, so shipping shrimp should be fine now. May want to look at your local temperature, if it's going to be in the 90F+ range may want to wait a bit longer.

$25 shipped for 20 Red Cherry Shrimp. Paypal preferred.

I'll include a few extra shrimp, to make sure 20 arrive in good shape. Shrimp will be a mix of adults and juveniles.

Will ship by USPS Priority. Continental US only. Shrimp will be in a kordon breather bag with a bit java moss for them to hold onto and packed in a foam insulated box.

I will ship on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, that way they don't get stuck in the post office for the weekend.

I will be going on vacation at the end next week, so can only ship on September 17, 18 and 19. Need to hear from anyone interested by the Wednesday morning at the latest so I have a chance to catch and mail them. Won't be able to ship again until I get back about 2 weeks later.

That's great. I hope you rinsed the bag with a bit of tank water. While I was catching the larger shrimp, some very small baby shrimp kept getting into the net. Didn't count them towards the numbers, and was too much work trying to catch those small 2mm long baby shrimp.

Yep they are death defying in their antics. I used to keep some culled shrimp in a betta tank, and they would risk death to take bits of algae wafer the betta was picking on.

Sorry folks, don't think I can really do $10. It costs around $6-8 to ship them by parcel post depending on far they go, then boxing them up and going to the post office. If local to georgia, people are free to come by and pick up for less.

Starting off with a larger number of shrimp improves the odds of getting a good mix of male and females, to get your colony established quicker.

May want to look for a local source, usually go for $1-2 a piece in most clubs.

AVN
10-04-2012, 10:58 PM
I didn't want to go as low as $10, I was hoping for something along the lines of $15-$20, as 20 shrimp is a bit much seeing as I already have an established colony. (Though nowhere nearly as giant as yours)

To be truthful I was looking to get a good portion of your moss. I've been looking for tons of Java/Naja and it's better to buy shrimp + moss together, seeing as how everyone overcharges for a tiny bit of moss that will grow rampant anyways.

I'd be happy with 5-10 shrimp and a large portion of moss. Don't even care if the shrimp DOA, as long as I get my huge amount of moss!

Oh hehe I see. I usually buy cheap bags of java moss at the local fish club auction each month unless people are bidding crazy amounts. I use it to ship shrimp out in, or just to keep in my shrimp and fry tanks. Going to a meeting this weekend, will see if I can get some to send out at whatever it cost me.

Chances are good someone at the border/customs would block them and they'd end up dead. Shipping live stuff and plants can be tricky. I would check out the forums for any fish clubs that are in canada, there are several. Post up a new there, and should be able to find someone to hook you up with shrimp.

The bags I use are kordon breather bags. I actually bought them from the site Lady Hobbs mentioned. Got 50 of them for a decent price. They seem to sell for pretty much the same price no matter where you buy them.

That 20g and 40g tanks I'm taking the shrimp from I dose with flourish excel and some other fertilizers without any issues. I suppose it is possible to overdose but it would have to be a large amount. I actually spot treat algae with a syringe on plants with flourish excel. Never noticed any shrimp fatalities from them.

Been a while since I've been on. Got busy with classes and exams, decided to avoid the computer till the exams were done.

Replied to all the pm's.

Regarding the shrimp, it is getting a bit cooler out now. They do have a fairly wide temperature range maybe around 65-80F, at which they are active and breed. Cooler than that they aren't as active or reproduce, so should be fine to ship. I think it should be fine to ship shrimp still for a while anyways before it gets too cold.

korith
11-11-2012, 06:38 PM
Sent some shrimp last week and they arrived safe and sound. Temperatures were a bit cold up north, in the low 50's when they arrived. I suppose I can ship for another week or two, as long as temps don't dip much lower. Think they will be alright.

I love the photos of these. You have so many!

I have a 30 litre nano cube with around 15 cherry shrimp and 10 rili shrimp (I know they'll interbreed but I don't mind) and it still looks empty!

How many do you think you have in total?

I haven't a clue how many there are. I been just taking them out of the 20g long, it doesn't even look I've removed any of them from the tank. If anything it looks like there are even more in the tank now. The 20g long has just red cherry shrimp in it, I think 3 otocinclus, and about 25 microrasboras. Heavily planted as well. If I had to guess maybe 300+ shrimp in it? Also have a 40g breeder planted as well, with 4 types of microrasboras, otocinclus and red cherry shrimp. That one is just a mess, the plants have overgrown and really needs to be trimmed up some day, no idea what all has bred in there.
The shrimp really have no predators in those two tanks, a few baby shrimp may get eaten but I really doubt it, never witnessed it. The adult cherry shrimp are as large or larger than the fish in the tanks.

korith
11-11-2012, 07:12 PM
A few recent pics of the shrimp in the 20g long. Camera isn't great so all the shrimp aren't visible. There are some fish in there if you look closely.

From my experience the fish you have will eat baby shrimp if given the chance, but if you have good hiding places they should be ok.

I don't know how the RCS would fare with the amano shrimp though

Hi, I'm very interested in getting some - considering what I already have in my tank, do you think those shrimp are at high risk for being eaten?

The problem is many fish eat stuff like these shrimp in the wild. Most fish will consider shrimp as food. About the only 'safe' fish most websites mention as shrimp safe are otocinclus. I have kept red cherry shrimp and other similar sized shrimp with several types of microrasboras and other small fish without any issues. May work with other fish. The adults are probably safe from some of the fish but may get picked off by some of those fish mentioned in your 46g. The baby shrimp or the smaller shrimp would probably end up as fish food. I would probably not add them to the 46g, would hate to have you buy them to only see them being a high priced meal.

Or you could always just start a shrimp tank :)

10g, small filter, 2 lights, a handfull of dwarf sag, piece of wood, and a little moss. May need a heater depending on temp of your house. Shrimp tank = awesome + can bring in a few bucks

The prices I put included shipping. 20 Red Cherry Shrimp $25 shipped or 30 Red cherry shrimp for $30 shipped. Trying not to ship less amounts, just isn't worthwhile. It costs around $6-8 each time, paypal fees, then to ship them by parcel post, kordon breather bag, box and take to post office.

Well the shrimp seem to be doing really well. Maybe a bit too well, they seem take offense to me taking their family members out of the tank and retaliate by breeding even more. Changed up the numbers a bit, 25 Red Cherry Shrimp $25 shipped or 35 Red cherry shrimp for $30 shipped. I tend to add in a few extras each time, just in case of any losses, though that rarely happens. A bit of java moss or subwassertang will be added to the bag for the shrimp to hold onto.

No way to predict deaths, sometimes it just happens. Sometimes shrimp do die in shipping or if they don't acclimate to the tank conditions quickly enough. That's why I like to include a few extras, just in case. Water was probably ok when the shrimp were bagged, the smell came after when you had those doa.

In a previous post I changed up the numbers a bit, 25 Red Cherry Shrimp $25 shipped or 35 Red cherry shrimp for $30 shipped. Lots of red cherry shrimp left, if you want to get like 500 we can work something out:p

Nice, I'm a huge fan of those small rasboras, keep them with the red cherry shrimp with no issues. My 20 has about 25 chili rasboras in it (boraras brigittae) and the 40g breeder has a few different types of small rasboras in it too. I think these small fish make any tank look huge.

Yes, I'm still trying to get some chilis. My LFS ordered them a while ago but what they received turned out to be Boraras urophthalmoides. I decided to take these for my 5 gal rather than continue waiting. They are great fish also and so tiny. I have a couple of otos in with them and 2 amano shrimp, but the tank still seems a little sparse. I'm going to move the amanos to my 20 gal long, and add some of the RCS for added color.

Shrimp arrived just when expected - about 4:00 today. Packaging couldn't have been better, no DOA, just a mass of activity. Here's one of the tanks they are now enjoying.

Good to hear they arrived safe. Haven't lost a bag of shrimp yet. Shrimp usually get real active when put into a new tank or right after a water change, have read it has to do with the pheromones they release into the water for breeding. They should color up a bit over the next day or so.

These shrimp have already colored up really nicely, just overnight. If anyone is looking for RCS, you can't go wrong with these from Korith. 1) the value is unbeatable - these are $3.50 or more each at the LFS, 2) they arrived perfectly packaged in just two days and 3) they are great specimens, varying sizes, and looking great in both of the tanks I have added them to.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the good words. In a few months you'll probably have a growing population yourself:p Once you can get a shrimp tank stable, it doesn't take long for the shrimp colony long to start multiplying.

When I first got my 35, most of them immediately hid in my deco...but after awhile, they got braver and started coming out in droves...now they are everywhere, lots of them free-swimming (especially when it's flake feeding time for the fish)...we've got babies (shrimplets?) popping up daily, too!

Thanks, even though I have other tanks this shrimp tank is one of my favorites. I should post a more recent picture, once I clean it up a bit. At the moment the tank is a mess, the plants have taken over and can barely see into the tank, going to thin out the plants this weekend.

Those look like Malaysian trumpet snails and if they are, you will soon have hundreds. I hate these and have one tank infested. At night the walls of the tank are covered in them. And yet, some folks actually pay money for these and put them in their tanks on purpose. I don't get that, but they will take care of stirring up the substrate as they live under that most of the time.
I even added about 5 assassins to the tank as they do a great job with pond snails. But so far I have found two empty assassin shells which were broken and I can't find the others. Not sure what happened to those.

On another note, the shrimp I got from you are breeding beautifully - tiny babies everywhere. In my Spec V, I have the very small boraras urophthalmoides. The shrimp swim all over the place alongside the fish which is just the kind of activity I was looking for. Great coloring also.

I had thought they might be mts as well but had some doubts, they didn't look too much like ones I had seen or had before. The color/pattern variation was different. I think you are right though, looked on google after I had posted the pic. Snails shouldn't last too long, have some assassin snails in every tank. Sometimes the assassins will disappear into the substrate before showing up again days later.

The boraras urophthalmoides is a nice fish, its actually a bit bigger than the brigittae and maculatus. It's nice being able to have a lot of them in a smaller tank without the tank looking overstocked.

SueD
08-04-2013, 06:31 PM
I have assassins that breed in one tank so I move them to all of my other tanks also. But for some reason, in this tank with the MTS they are not surviving and not doing anything to bring down the MTS. Hope you have better success. I'd be interested to see your results. Of course, you don't yet have the hoards of MTS that I have - ICK!

I'm to the point of tearing this tank down and starting it all over but I'll have to convince my son to help. It was his tank after all, and has fallen into my care. He'll be going back to school in a few weeks but maybe this can be a project for his winter break.

I moved the snails I could find out into a bare tank that has some apisto fry in it. They will act as a cleanup crew for the tank. Yep, the fish in earlier post is an otocinclus, I have a few in the tank. They are one of the few fish that are shrimp safe. The otos seem to do well in the shrimp tanks, they more or less eat the same types of foods the shrimp do.

Sent some shrimp to someone last week, the temps were in the low 90's and they did alright. The biggest problem to shipping the shrimp seems to be when no one is at home when the mail comes, the box could sit out in the sun for hours, that could spell disaster.

I have no experience with platys and RCS together personally, but I will tell you that I have full grown rummynose, glowlight, and black neon tetras in a 30 gallon tank, and I have cherry shrimp that have successfully bred in there. When the reach a large enough size, they will come out in the open in the daylight. I attribute their success to the java moss and rock nooks and crannies in my tank for them to hide in and around. Even though people said it couldn't be done, I put shrimp in there anyway (Lol) because I already had a shrimp only 10 gallon. They seem to have taken hold and established. We got them at about the same time, perhaps some of the tiniest shrimplets may have become snacks, but with good water conditions (NO copper containing chemicals), they breed like crazy, so you would not even miss a few that may go missing.

Good to know, never had platys. Mixing shrimp with any type of fish is always a risk, never know what will happen. Sometimes the fish will completely ignore the shrimp. With enough hiding places could get stable population of shrimp in the tank. Chances are some of the baby shrimp probably get picked off by the fish, but enough survive to keep the shrimp colony going. I think the only fish most sources or articles mention is otocinclus.
