I feed my fish flake food. However, I heard that it is good to vary their food as they get bored. So I offered them some pieces today from a sample that came with the tank (but I bought it at a thrift shop so who knows how old it is). The food was totally sealed in a wrapper that was tough to open and seemed fresh. When I fed it to the fish, they loved it and went nuts over it.
But it was tough and not breaking up. The little neons would hold on to it and push it away and nibble at it as it fell. But the bigger neons ate some of them and I could see the lumps in their tummy.
So tonight I gave them a few flakes to see if it helped move things along. Not much. But those with distended bellies are now having tummies that seem to be flashing like little white lights, looking down and jerking a bit. I'm afraid they are having blocked tummies. Should I give them mashed peas or just not feed them a couple of days? Or will they be dead by morning? I have turned off the light 1/2 hour early to give a quieter place for them. I have thrown that food away, though they seemed to enjoy it. I did not feel like I overfed them.
