I'd say in a 29G long you could manage 2 dwarfs, either two males or a mated pair.

If you can't buy a mated pair then get 1m and 4f, allow them to pair up then rehome the remaining 3f's.

How long has the tank been set up and running? In my experience dwarfs can sometimes be fickle about water conditions and are best suited to a stable, mature tank. What species in particular were you looking at?

Yes, there's no way to give accurate advice until we know just what cichlids you are looking at. That said I have a strong suspicion your looking at the "mixed African cichlid" tank and a petco or petsmart. If that's the case your tank is to small for a healthy community of those. There are plenty of cichlids you can have in that size tank, including some typed of Africans, but it's gonna take allot more research and planning.

Did You see my post? You can still get some cichlids that are compatible for a tank size like yours. They are known as dwarf cichlids, Common ones are;

Kribensis, German Blue Rams, Bolivian Rams, Apistogrammas (cacatuoide, agassizii) :22:

You could also do smaller African Tanganyikan cichlids like I hace done in my 29. Shell dwellers, julidochromis, leleupi, all fine if stocked right. You could even get away with a small demonsi harem if you wanted mbuna, though that would be trickier.
